Perinatal Mental Health

The perinatal period, which encompasses pregnancy and postpartum, is a time of profound change that can bring both joy and stress to parents. Perinatal mental health symptoms such as depression, anxiety, irritability and rage can appear during the prenatal or postpartum period, impacting the parent and family.

Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are the most common complications of childbirth, affecting 15-20% of people who give birth. Despite their prevalence many women can experience a sense of isolation or shame for feeling anything other than joy and gratitude during the perinatal period. Therapy during this time can be enormously helpful in making sense of what you’re experiencing, finding ways to manage and reduce symptoms, prioritizing self-care, and improving support and connection.
